This is not my TORONTO LIFE
A new low for TL

It’s been a while since I last read TL, but in the meantime I’ve actually subscribed to the print version of the magazine, just to ensure that the fodder is fresh. While perusing the Feb edition, we come across this piece of shit example of what qualifies as content to the editors of TL, once again written by Jonathan Kay.

Almost Rich: an examination of the true cost of city living and why rich is never rich enough

An income of $196,000 places you in the country’s top one per cent of earners. But does it make you wealthy?

So here’s an article about how even though these people are making more than double my family income, in reality, they aren’t doing that well. Indeed, the people douchebags profiled  In his defense, after being mocked mercilessly on Gawker, Kay now claims that this article is in no way autobiographical, and he’s glad that the site’s readers have the “attention span of a 3-year-old”
Better than the article though, are the comments online, and here are some of the best:
  1. If you spend $800/month on wine and $1000/mo on clothing then you can’t complain that you don’t make much money because you pay a lot of taxes. And seriously, when people say they don’t have much money left over each month because they pay $1500/mo for childcare, what on earth do they think people making $50k a year do with their two kids? Everyone has to pay childcare costs. Money doesn’t go far in Toronto but let’s put this in perspective; these people are still very wealthy and privileged. If they don’t have much money left over it’s because they don’t know how to budget or prioritize.

  2. Rich is never rich enough when you blow your money on frivolous, nonessential crap. I grew up in a low income household and I make a month what some of these people blow on clothing or designer food products alone. But you know what? I live well, I don’t have any debt and I’m doing just fine.
I don’t understand why Toronto Life is constantly profiling the upperclass and then making them out to be paupers. You want me to be impressed by your urban coverage? Then profile hard working, fiscally responsible people the rest of us can actually relate to, instead of glorifying boneheads who spent $800 a month on wine.

  3. It’s clear to see, Toronto Life is without a moral compass, and caters to the 1% who have the luxury of overspending a month salary which is about 5 TIMES MORE then the average income. Then one of those earners considers it OK to write a sympathy pience…

What kind of editor is OK with publishing this? The group of people behind this article, and organization ‘Toronto Life’ NEED A WAKE UP CALL.

I think I know what type of editor is okay with publishing an article like this: one that realizes that this type of inflammatory crap gets publicity for an otherwise irrelevant magazine.

Rich people buy expensive houses in the Annex.

Did you hear? The houses in the Annex are a bargain for those normally confined for Forest Hill. So they buy them, and move in. And Toronto Life does a story on them, so I feel shitty about the crappy house I rent.

I wonder how these people feel about TL posting their street numbers? I’m going to ring their bells and ask. I’ve always wanted to speak with Belinda Stronach.

What? You couldn’t get to the cottage before nightfall? FUCK YOU!
Actually I’d like to thank TL for this article, for this article was the proverbial straw for me. For years I’ve wondered who the people featured in this magazine are, as they don’t resemble me, my family, or my friends.  Apparently, there was a lot of negative reaction to this article. And so, in the vein of “quality conversation”, I created this site, to document my continuing dissatisfaction with a magazine (and website) that seems to purposely portray my city and the people who live within in it in poorly and unrealistically. No wonder the rest of Canada hates us.

The Torontoist let's us know what they think about this shit.

We also hear that this whole Internet thing is a fad. But what the fuck do we know? We are a MAGAZINE. Printed on dead trees

Are you sure it’s new? Did she tell you that?
Ok, admittedly I think that they are poking fun at the Star with this one, whatever, it’s still lame.
